Ghee Promoted to Become New Athletic Director; Van Kula Named New Head Hockey Coach
St. Joseph’s Prep is excited to announce that we have named a new leader for our Athletic Program. Longtime Prep administrator Bryan Ghee has been selected to become the next Athletic Director at St. Joe's Prep. Mr. Ghee has served as an Associate Athletic Director for the past three years and has been an integral part of the department during that time.
Ghee has been at the Prep for 15 years, starting as an Athletic Trainer and then moving through a variety of leadership roles including the Dean’s Office, Transportation, and Activities. Ghee is well-known for his care for our students and working with the community to ensure that they are having the best possible experiences.
Before coming to the Prep, Ghee worked as an Athletic Trainer at the collegiate level. He has been very active with the wrestling and football programs during his tenure at the Prep and has become a resource for our coaches. Working in Athletics, he has made many connections with the other administrators in the Catholic League and the PIAA. Ghee has a wealth of knowledge in ensuring student success outside of the classroom in co-curricular activities and athletics and is the right person to lead our Athletic Program.
In addition to his Athletic and Co-Curricular experience, Ghee is also well-regarded as an Ignatian educator. He has participated in the Ignatian Leadership Seminar and took a master’s class in Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm. A frequent Kairos leader, Ghee values Jesuit education with its emphasis on educating the whole person.
In coaching news:
We are excited to announce that Charlie Van Kula ’14 is the new head ice hockey coach, replacing Dave Giacomin, who has been let go after 13 seasons with the program.
Van Kula was a four-year letterwinner between the pipes for Prep Hockey during his time as a student. He went on to Boston College where he worked as a student manager under Hall of Fame coach Jerry York and saw a stint as a walk-on during the 2015-16 season. Van Kula returned to the Prep in 2018-19 as an Alumni Service Corps member, during which time he served as a Varsity and JV assistant coach. He was a frequent presence at subsequent Prep Hockey summer camps and clinics. Van Kula also coached at a variety of the Ed Snider Youth Hockey and Education organization’s programming from 2018-2021. Since returning to the Prep full-time as a member of the Institutional Advancement team in 2022, Van Kula has served as the head coach of the JV Gray team for the past three seasons. In addition to his coaching and playing experience, Van Kula has been an on-ice official for the past 17 seasons, including three full-time seasons in the USHL and NAHL. He currently referees at the NCAA Division 1 and Division 3 levels and has become a leader in the district’s development program for new officials. In addition to his bachelor’s degree from Boston College, Van Kula also holds a master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University.
