Peterson ’21 Reflects On His Service Creating Face Shields

Last spring, when the need for face shields was at its height and far outpacing production, Computer Science teacher Mrs. Teresa Hoffman offered her Computer Science students the opportunity to put their computer programming skills to good use: create masks and face shields for frontline healthcare workers in local hospitals. She and colleague Sonia Nelson offered students the use of the school’s 3D printers to create the masks and shields.

Among those who took advantage of this opportunity was Tyler Peterson ’21, who was a student in Mrs. Hoffman’s AP Computer Science class. He started making shields and eventually donated many to Paoli Hospital. Once they were able to get the shields from their normal suppliers, Tyler switched to creating the face shields for low income senior citizens in West Philadelphia, many of whom feel more comfortable using shields in addition to masks.

Tyler recently wrote a reflection about his service. Click here to read his reflection.
