ThanksGiving Food drive

Thanksgiving is coming early this year!

This year we have created another electronic list of items for our Thanksgiving ‘wish-list’ in order to make sure that we get the help our neighbors and friends need. Moreover, we are proud to offer some fresh-food options, and we also plan to have the frozen turkeys delivered directly to the Prep from this list.

As many of you know very well, our Thanksgiving traditions have deep roots at the Prep. For over two decades, the Prep’s Thanksgiving Food Drive has served as a memorable representation of our community’s commitment to our neighbors while carrying out our Gospel’s challenge to serve others. A few details about this year’s drive make it special. But first, take a look at the inspiring generosity that our community demonstrated last year:

  • Prep students and faculty delivered 181 turkeys, frozen pie crusts, and baskets of food to our neighbors in walking distance from the Gesu church. The generosity overflowed: the baskets alone contained an average 42.68 pounds of food (over 14,000 pounds of nonperishable food in the whole drive)!
  • Families at St. Francis Inn, the Coalition against Hunger, St. Peter the Apostle School (on Girard Avenue), Visitation BVM (on Lehigh Avenue), and a handful of people from our own Prep community received food or baskets.
  • Homeless men at Our Brother’s Place, an emergency shelter in North Philadelphia, received cases of fresh Amoroso bread.
  • GrandFamily Resource Center at SOWN (a Philadelphia-area organization that provides innovative solutions so adults age fifty and over lead independent, healthy lives and age in place in their homes and communities) received baskets for grandparents who are currently raising their grandchildren.

We received positive feedback from our donors about the convenience of this type of giving. Generous individuals from all over the country - including California, New Mexico, North Carolina, Florida, Maryland, New York, New Jersey and at least 208 Pennsylvanians - donated over $30,000 worth of food to the Prep's week-long online drive - an event that broke records and set the digital world on fire! (And those are just the locations that we know about - 19.1% of the donations were anonymous).

We wish to make it as easy as possible to give to this drive, so please contact us with any concerns or suggestions.
