Annual Initiatives

Operation Warm

For the last four years, the St. Joseph’s Prep community has raised money through a Dress Down Day in order to provide a local school (Holy Name School in Camden, DePaul Catholic School and Visitation BVM, in Philadelphia, PA) with coats for the winter through Operation Warm.  Prep students go to the local school and set up a makeshift store so each elementary school student can pick out their color and make sure they get the appropriate size.  To date, approximately 1000 children have received coats through the Prep’s generosity.

Thanksgiving Food Drive

The annual Thanksgiving Food Drive is an effort to provide approximately 275 families in the immediate vicinity of The Prep with needed food items. Throughout November, the Mission and Ministry office asks each student to bring in food items that will be included in a food basket delivered to families identified by local leaders as needing assistance. Each homeroom will be assigned one specific item to contribute to the food baskets. Homeroom assignments will be available in the Fall. The students, together as a homeroom, will deliver the completed baskets on the last day of classes before Thanksgiving Break.

Turkey Donation Information

Every Thanksgiving meal needs a turkey, and as a part of our drive, we ask our community to donate turkeys to the effort. If you are willing to donate a frozen turkey for the food baskets, we would greatly appreciate your help.  Turkeys are donated throughout the month of November to prepare for delivery after our Thanksgiving liturgy on the last day of school before Thanksgiving break.  Volunteers will be in the foyer to collect donations both before and after school. We also collect turkeys at the Parent-Teacher Conferences, as well as on the evenings of the Fall Cape and Sword production.

Operation Santa Claus

Operation Santa Claus (OSC) is a program in which the Prep community donates, wraps, and delivers toys to families in need throughout the Philadelphia area. We have been participating in this program for a number of years and have delivered tens of thousands of toys to needy children.

Previously, we worked in collaboration with the Archdioceses to run this program. Unfortunately, the office running the program in the Archdioceses has closed. However, for the third year, the Prep has elected to continue Operation Santa Claus independently. To support this program, we ask that each family donate $25. The money will be collected in homerooms the first two weeks of December, or you can donate online.

OSC Shopping & Wrapping

Prep students will gather at the Prep on a Sunday in December and depart for a local Toys ‘R' Us to purchase the presents for the drive. Shopping for these gifts is a project for the students only.  Students will return to the Prep to wrap the presents with other members of the Prep community(family, friends, alums,etc.).  Wrapping should finish by 4pm.  Anyone interested should sign up online.

OSC Christmas Party

For the third year in a row, our OSC Christmas Party will be offered in conjunction with our Operation Santa Claus initiative.  We will invite the families in need to the Prep for a Christmas Party on a Saturday in December for food, fun, and Christmas spirit.  Pictures with Santa and gifts will be provided underneath the Christmas tree for a great start to the Christmas season. Anyone interested should sign up online.

Philly Spring Cleanup

Every year in conjunction with the Mayor’s office, St. Joe’s Prep participates in the Philly Spring Clean-up.  Prep students, faculty, staff, parents and alums team up with local block captains and neighbors to beautify our surrounding neighborhood.  Participants meet at St. Joe’s Prep ready to tackle the lots and streets in North Philadelphia that we all call our second home.
