Meet the Staff
Mr. Samuel Deitch, B.A.
Campus Minister, Director of Ignatian Service
Chair of Mission & Ministry
Mr. Deitch has been at St. Joseph’s Prep for 13 years. A proud graduate of St. James High School in Chester, PA and a Theology major from Saint Joseph’s University, he enjoys working with many of his friends from college at the Prep. Mr. Deitch has been married for almost 13 years to Marissa and they have two wonderful children, Sarah and Joshua.
Mr. Jonathan Jerome, B.A.
Campus Minister, Director of Retreats & Liturgy
This is Mr. Jerome’s fourth year at St. Joseph's Prep. Originally from Charlotte, NC, he attended The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, where he majored in Theology and Religious Studies and minored in Philosophy. His main interests are the Catholic Liturgy and the development of catechesis in the American Church since the reforms of the Second Vatican Council. He has two older brothers, both graduates of NC State University and a sister who graduated from Emory & Henry College.
Fr. Stephen Surovick, SJ, M.A., M. Div., STL
Chaplain, Director of Adult Faith Formation
Fr. Steve is “home” after many years of Jesuit formation. He grew up in Voorhees, NJ, with two younger brothers, having attended Eastern High School and then the University of Scranton. After working in local and state government, he entered the Jesuits in 2003, thanks, in part, to meetings with former Prep President, Fr. Bruce Bidinger, which took place right here at 18th and Girard. Fr. Steve was ordained a priest in 2013. In between those years, Jesuit formation has taken him to Syracuse (Jesuit novitiate), Chicago (for a degree in Philosophy), Washington, DC (teaching at Gonzaga College High School), and Boston (for degrees in Theology). Just before arriving at St. Joe’s Prep, he spent a year at Holy Trinity Parish in Washington, DC. He is both humbled and excited to be a part of the team here, and is happy to finally be able to watch Philadelphia sports on TV.
