SWIMMING RECORDS FALL

The Prep swim team started its Catholic League season last Thursday with a decisive 75-19 victory over Roman Catholic. The team opened the meet by shattering the 200 Medley Relay Pool Record. The time of 1:39.31 knocked nearly four seconds off of the old mark set last year. The medley is comprised of Matt Belecanech '10, Jim Fenningham '07, Greg Mahon '09 and Terence Mahon '07.

Four events later, sophomore Greg Mahon led the Prep to victory in the 100 Fly. As he raced to the final wall, another record seemed to be in jeopardy but Greg finished nearly half a second off of the mark set by Prep swimming legend, Chris Mayfield '88, who holds 10 Prep pool and school records. But, as his brother Greg climbed out of the pool, Terence Mahon '07 readied himself for the 100 Free. The elder Mahon pulled off what the younger barely missed as his 48.46 finish bested the 48.77 record posted by Mayfield in 1987. Terence Mahon currently holds four Prep pool and school records to Mayfield's nine.

"With each swim, Terence, Greg and the other members of the team threaten to make even more Prep swimming history," says Paul Morrissey, assistant swim coach. "They want to duplicate another of Mayfield's accomplishments, winning the Catholic League Championship."

In 1988, Mayfield captained the Prep squad as it won its last Catholic League Championship, a title LaSalle has claimed since.
