PREP TO CELEBRATE IGNATIAN HERITAGE WEEK

The Prep is dedicating the week of April 23-26 to a celebration of our Ignatian heritage. The Ignatian Heritage Week Committee - composed of Dr. Stew Barbera ’86, Sam Deitch, Kathy Quinter, Paul Rourke, S.J. and Andrew Whelan - has planned several events for the week. Each day will highlight a different aspect of our identity.

Every day during seventh period announcements, students representing each class will offer “This I Believe…” essays celebrating a different aspect of the Jesuit and Ignatian tradition that has impacted them. These aspects include the idea of the magis, Jesuit pedagogy, and the call to be a man for and with others. Students, in addition, will receive a t-shirt, designed by two Prep students, celebrating Ignatian Heritage Week.

On Tuesday, April 24 at 4:00pm, Rev. Scott Pilarz, S.J., the President of the University of Scranton, will offer a reflection to our school community. The week will culminate with a special celebration of the Eucharist on Thursday morning.

Also on Thursday, April 26th, we are going to express our solidarity with those most in need by having a day of modest fasting. Instead of our usual lunch offerings, the Dining Room will serve bread and soup as well as water to drink. Soup will cost $2.25, rolls will be 75 cents, and bottled water will cost $1. We will also refrain from serving breakfast and selling snacks at Chief’s Place and the vending machines will be turned off as well. Art teacher Ms. Deb Hilton and students have volunteered their time to create ceramic bowls which will be sold for $2 to raise money for a non-profit organization dedicated to feeding the hungry in the greater Philadelphia region. Additional donations will be appreciated.

“Though this day will require a modest sacrifice on the part of those who decide to participate, our hope is that it will be a meaningful opportunity for all of us to share in the plight of those who are hungry and to deepen our gratitude for the abundance we enjoy,” says Mr. Rourke. “Students and any others who would rather not participate in the fast day are encouraged to bring a lunch to school.”
