The privately financed National Achievement Program was initiated in 1964 to honor academically promising black youth throughout the nation and to provide scholarships to a substantial number of the most outstanding participants. More than 27,000 young men and women have received Achievement Scholarship awards worth about $86 million.
The initial screen for semifinalists was determined by taking the 2005 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. All Achievement Scholarship winners are selected from the Finalist group on the basis of their abilities, accomplishments, and potential for success in college.
