BLACK HISTORY MONTH EVENTS SCHEDULED
The Black and Latino Culture Club is planning events and a film series to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments of African Americans, as well as document the struggles encountered.
Besides selected readings during the morning announcements and a school-wide contest on Black History, they are offering a “Black History Month Film Festival.” Throughout the month of February (Thurs 2/1, Tues 2/6, Tuesday 2/13, Tuesday 2/20 and Tuesday 2/27), five films of historical importance will be shown:
- Tuskegee Airmen - focusing on the “Fighting 99th” (the first squadron of black American pilots allowed to fight for their country), Tuskegee Airmen portrays the story of “four newly recruited pilots who are united by a desire to serve their country, at a time when black flyers are not welcomed in the Air Force.” [Tues, 2/13]
- The Murder of Emmett Till - based on the brutal lynching of the 14-year old Emmett Till, this American Experience (PBS) documentary recounts “the murder and the trial that horrified the nation and the world and later helped mobilize the civil rights movement.” [Tues, 2/20]
- In the Heat of the Night - classic film of the late 60’s (starring Sidney Poitier) about a black Philadelphia homicide detective who becomes embroiled in a murder investigation within the “deep South.” [Tues, 2/27]
