Baseball Advances in the State PlayoffsPrep baseball is the Catholic League's AAAA representative to the state tournament, marking the squad's first ever appearance in the PIAA playoffs. The Prep defeated Garnet Valley 4-3 in the first round to advance to to play West Chester East. Urinetown Opens This WeekendTickets are now on sale online for the Cape and Sword Drama Society's spring production of Urinetown: The Musical. In Memoriam: Nick Kueny '43We are sad to report that Nick Kueny ’43, the longtime math teacher and athletic trainer, passed away yesterday at the age of 83. A viewing will be held in the Church of the Gesu on Friday, April 24 from 9:30-11:30 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at noon. Burial will follow at Holy Sepulcher Cemetery in Cheltenham. In lieu of flowers, the Kueny family requests that donations be made in Nick’s name to St. Joseph’s Prep or St. John’s Hospice (1221 Race Street). More Information >> |

Cockenberg To Be Honored at Penn RelaysCurt Cockenberg '71, longtime Prep track and cross country coach, has been selected to be the "Honorary High School Boys' Referee" at this year's Penn Relays, to be held at Franklin Field April 23-25. Only one boys coach and one girls coach are honored every year. All Prep track and cross country alumni are invited to come to the Relay Carnival on Saturday, April 25 to help Curt celebrate this tremendous honor. The ceremony is tentatively scheduled to begin at 2:50pm. |

Mock Trial Team Finishs SecondThe Prep Mock Trial team finished second in the city and fifth in the state (out of almost 300 teams). The members of the team are all juniors: Gabriel Bedell, Thomas Bernardi, Joseph Brenner, Matthew Chung, David Costigan, Fred DeRitis, Nicholas Franchetti, Alex Glica, Michael Lario, Matthew McDonnell, Arguna Pettit Jr. and Frank Rizzo. A special you goes to the coaches, Tom Johnson, Esq. and Charles Gallagher, Esq. '65 while history teacher Kathryn Quinter served as the moderator. |

Cape and Sword Fundraiser: My Fair LadyThe Cape and Sword Drama Society presents a staged reading of one of the 20th Century’s best musicals My Fair Lady on Friday, April 17 at 7:00pm in the Prep Theatre. The show will star Tony Braithwaite '89 as Professor Henry Higgins, Maria Brinkmann MMA '00 as Eliza Doolittle, Michael Zabel '96 as Colonel Hugh Pickering, Dan Schwartz '05 as Alfred P. Doolittle, Joe Mallon '99 as Freddy Eynsford-Hill, Liz McDonald MMA '01 as Mrs. Pearce and Maureen McDonald as Mrs. Higgins. All other roles will be played by Brendan Coffey '04, Anthony D'Angelo '07, Will Dennis '01, Jen Lancaster MMA '05, Liz McCauley MMA '04, Bridgid Ryan MSJA '02 and Tommy Saporito '04. All proceeds to benefit the Cape and Sword Drama Society. |

In Memoriam: Ed Burke '63It is with great sadness to report that today we received word of the passing of legendary Prep coach and administrator Ed Burke '63, who died suddenly in his home on Monday, March 23. Coach Burke recently suffered a relapse of lung cancer and was about to begin another round of treatment today. A viewing will be held on Thursday, March 26 from 6-9pm, and Friday, March 27 from 10-11am, at St. Dorothy’s Church (Township Line and Burmont Rd., Drexel Hill, PA 19026). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11am Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery in Yeadon. An "Eddie Burke Scholarship Fund" is being created in Eddie's memory and the family requests that memorial gifts be made to the Prep for that fund. |

Prep Day at the PhilliesEach year our families and alumni are invited to “Prep at Citizens Bank Park.” This year, we have 500 tickets available on a first come first-served basis for the Phillies-Padres game on Friday, April 17, at 7:05pm. We have purchased a block of "Power Tickets" for $30 each. Each ticket entitles the holder to a seat within Scoreboard Porch in left field above Harry the K's Restaurant, and a $10 credit for any concession stand in the ballpark is barcoded on each ticket. |

Hawktion Special Event This SundaySt. Joe's Prep's own Tony Braithwaite, considered by many to be the funniest man in Philadelphia theatre, will perform his standup routine on Sunday, March 8 at 7 p.m., in the Prep theatre. Admission is the purchase of a "Tuition Share" raffle ticket or a monetary donation to benefit Hawktion. |

Speedy Morris Basketball CampThe annual Speedy Morris Basketball Camp for boys ages 8-16 will be held June 8-12 and June 15-19 from 9:00am - 3:00pm, in the Kelly Fieldhouse. The camp costs $190 per week which includes an official camp t-shirt. The schedule for the day is stretching and remarks followed by stations, lecture, foul shooting, competition, 5-on-5 games and concluding remarks. Mock Trip Team Advances to City ChampionshipThe varsity mock trial team won quarter- and semi-finals and will compete in the City Championship against Overbrook at Temple Law School on North Broad Street in Philadelphia across from the Liacouras Center on Saturday, March 14 at 4:00pm. Since the Prep and Overbrook will compete in the City Championship, each will also compete in the State Championships later in March. |

Breaking the WavesBreaking the Waves, a charitable foundation dedicated to raising awareness of the epidemic of adolescent depression, will host its third annual swim-a-thon on Sunday, January 18. Held in conjunction with the Merion Mercy Academy swiMMAs, more than 70 athletes will convene for mass in the Church of the Gesu at 9:00pm, before taking turns swimming in the Prep pool from 11:00pm-6:00am. |

Taggart Series Hosts Lena Williams The Taggart Cultural Events Series at St. Joseph's Prep is hosting journalist and author Lena Williams to campus on Wednesday, December 10 at 7:00pm, to discuss race and the division it has caused. Williams, author of It's the Little Things: Everyday Interactions that Anger, Annoy and Divide the Races, offers a "candid, sensible and humorously informative approach to improving race relations." Prep Hockey Starts Season in First Place After a 4-2 win over Germantown Academy on November 24, the Prep hockey team had four wins to lead the Eastern High School Hockey League. The victory moved the Prep into a first place tie with La Salle, the defending Flyers Cup champion and the Prep's next opponent. The Prep (4-1-0) and La Salle (3-0-2) each have eight points after five games. |

Ross Euteneuer '09 Named Student of the WeekSenior Ross Euteneuer has been named the Dugan Student of the Week for the week ending November 21. This past summer, Euteneuer attended World Youth Day in Australia where he got to participate in Mass celebrated by Pope Benedict XVI. While in Australia he also volunteered his time in a soup kitchen. Euteneuer is a member of the French Club and traveled with them to Montreal and Quebec. He is also involved the bowling team, intramural basketball and a member of his CYO basketball team. Prep assistant principal Mr. Joseph Nawn says Ross "is a team player, very dependable and a vital part of the bowling team. He never misses a practice and is always there supporting his teammates." |

Thanksgiving Food Drive The CSC is sponsoring a Thanksgiving food drive. The list of food items is needed for a Thanksgiving meal as well as some everyday necessities. Please have each member of your homeroom bring in 5 of the item assigned to your homeroom. These should be placed in the basket provided by the CSC beginning Wednesday, November 12. Leave the basket in your homeroom until homeroom on Friday, November 21 when the baskets should be taken to the multipurpose room. Thank you for your support. |

Prep-Malvern Football on Thanksgiving Day The football team will continue its Thanksgiving rivalry with Malvern Prep on Thursday, November 27 at Villanova Stadium. The game will begin at 10:30 a.m. and tickets will cost $10. There are four options to purchase tickets:

Hockey Beats Malvern The ice hockey team started league play on Friday night with a stunning come-from-behind 5-3 victory over Malvern Prep in an Eastern High School Hockey League game. It was the first time that the Prep has beaten Malvern, an eight-time Flyers Cup champion. Late in the third period, with the Prep down 3-2 and just five minutes to go, Kevin Melone '11 tied it. Two minutes later, Tim DiPretoro '11 scored to put the Prep on top followed less than a minute later by a goal from sophomore Matt Napoli '11 , who put the icing on the cake with a goal from the blue line. Goalie Paul Sjostrom '11 stopped 26 of 29 shots and Joe Birmingham '10 led the team with four points. |

6th Annual Prep Book Drive Runs This December
The sixth annual Prep Book Drive to benefit Philadelphia READS will run from December 8 through 19.
During the first five years of the drive, over 50,000 books have been collected, including over 15,000 books last year. This year the drive will only accept books in the grade range of K - 8th grade. Books should be gently used or in very good condition and are to be dropped off in Room 103.

Prep Football Faces La Salle in Round One of PCL Playoffs
The Prep Football team earned third place in the league and will face La Salle on Saturday, November 8 at 1:00pm at Plymouth-Whitemarsh High School in the first round of the Catholic League playoffs. Tickets are available in advance in the Treasurer's Office for $7 or at the gate for $10 on gameday. |

Cross Country Excels at PCL Champs
At the Catholic League Cross Country Championships, the varsity and JV finished second and the freshman finished first. John Pickhaver '09 became the second Prep runner in history to win the individual title. In addition, first-team, all-Catholic honors were presented to John Castillo '09, Chris O'Sullivan '10 and Tim Dougherty '09. Second team honors were presented to Brian Wolff '11 and Matt Chung '10 while Jim Murphy '10 earned honorable mention. |

Indian Jesuit At SJU To Discuss His Experiences
Father Tony Uvary, S.J., an Indian Jesuit who has seen firsthand the violence against Christians in Orissa, India, will speak on his experiences at Saint Joseph's University on Sunday, October 26. Mass will be celebrated in the Chapel of St. Joseph at 11:00am. Immediately following Mass, Fr. Uvary will show a short documentary and a PowerPoint presentation, as well as share his own experiences. Refreshments will be provided and the event is being jointly sponsored by the Jesuit Communities of St. Joseph's Prep and Saint Joseph's University. |

Cross Country Wins Division TitleThe Cross Country team posted the lowest team score of the day to win the Catholic League Southern Division championship at Belmont Plateau, the second year in a row the Prep has won the division crown. The team had 18 team points, well ahead of second-place Roman Catholic (44). They also had the top three individual finishers, led by John Pickhaver '09 (16:32) and John Castillo '09 (16:49). |

Prep Hawk Featured on 6ABCMJ McGinn '09, this year's Hawk mascot, will be featured on Channel 6's "High School Huddle" on Saturday, October 18 at 7:30pm. The segment will feature highlights from mascot tryouts, sideline footage from a game and even a one-on-one-tutorial between MJ and Tom Burgoyne '83, the Phillie Phanatic. Glavin Named New Crew CoachJim Glavin '65 has been named the new crew coach, replacing longtime coach Bill Lamb '79, who resigned earlier this month to pursue new business opportunities. Glavin has a long and distinguished coaching career, dating back to the early 1970s when he led the Baldwin School to a National Junior Girls Championship. Since then he has coached at many prestigious locations, including the Vesper Boat Club, Saint Joseph's University and United States Rowing. Most recently he was the freshman/novice coach at Mount St. Joseph's Academy, where the squad won the National Freshman Championship in 2004 through 2006, and the Vesper Club, where he served as the director of the club's technical camp for varsity-caliber high school rowers. |

The Taggart Series Presents Peter Singer, Ph.D.Join us on Wednesday, October 1 at 7:00pm as the Taggart Cultural Series presents Peter W. Singer, Ph.D, author of Children at War. In his lecture, Dr. Singer lays out the underlying causes of child soldiering, the methods by which children are recruited and trained for war, and the dark implications for global security. With a fuller understanding of how the doctrine emerged, he then provides the answers for how this terrible practice can be defeated. There is no charge for this event, but we ask that you RSVP for seating purposes. |

Cape and Sword Drama Society Announces 2008-2009 SeasonThe Cape and Sword Drama Society has announced its shows for the 2008-2009 season. In the fall, Cape and Sword will produce Scapin and the spring show will be Urinetown. Scapin was adapted from a Moliere play by Tony Award Winner Bill Irwin while Urinetown concerns corporate repression and a socialist revolt in a futuristic society. Auditions for Scapin are Monday, September 15 at 2:40pm. Applications for positions on Stage Crew and Production Staff are also available and are due September 16.

Two Prep Grads Enter SocietyVincent Marchionni '04 and Kevin Hughes '04 entered the Society of Jesus on August 23 at a ceremony at St. Andrew Hall in Syracuse, NY. They were joined by eight other men from the three provinces.

Prep Cycling to Go City to ShoreFor the first time, the Prep Cycling Club will be participating officially in the "Bike MS: City to Shore Ride" on September 27 and 28. The annual event, which raises money for multiple sclerosis research, is ranked by Bicycling Magazine as one of the best cycling experiences in the Delaware Valley. The Prep team will ride to honor of any member of the entire Prep community affected by multiple sclerosis. Read More >> |

Changes to Daily Schedule to Accompany Expanded CampusAs preparations are made to begin use of the newly renovated Jesuit Hall this fall, some minor changes have been made to daily class schedules. In order to accommodate movement between classes in both buildings, there will be five minutes between class periods. (Previously, there were four minutes between classes.) With the time between classes changing, during a regular school day Homeroom will now begin at 8:25am and Eighth Period will end at 2:34pm.
