Prep at the ShoreThere is still time to register for the annual Prep at the Shore - a gathering of St. Joseph's Prep alumni, parents, faculty and staff which will take place on Sunday, August 17 at the Avalon Yacht Club. Mass, celebrated by new Prep President Rev. George W. Bur, S.J. '59 will begin at noon with a reception (heavy hors d'oeuvres and open bar) to follow from 12:30-3:00pm. The cost is $50 per person. New CFO NamedRev. George W. Bur, S.J. '59, President of St. Joseph's Prep, has announced that Timothy G. O'Shaughnessy has been named Chief Financial Officer (CFO) after an extensive search. O'Shaughnessy comes to the Prep after holding the position of Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of the Business, Sport and Entertainment Group of Aramark Corporation. In addition, he worked for Arthur Andersen. "I have selected Mr. O'Shaughnessy," Fr. Bur said, "because of his excellent skills and qualifications, and his commitment to the mission of the Prep. I am grateful for his willingness to join us." O'Shaughnessy, who is the father of a Prep alumnus and a current student, will begin his duties on August 18. |

Clark Wins Bronze at World Rowing ChampionshipsKeanan Clark '09 won a bronze medal at the Junior World Rowing Championships in the United States men's eight. The tournament was held in Linz/Autensheim, Austria from July 22 through 27. Read More at www.worldrowing.com >> |

In Memoriam: Dr. Earl Hart '39We are sad to report the passing of legendary Prep teacher Dr. Earl J. Hart ’39, who passed away having been in failing health for the last year. He is survived by his daughter Joanne Boylan, his granddaughter Heather (Boylan) Ruggiero, grandsons Brendan Boylan ’94 and Kevin Boylan ’98 and great-granddaughter Avery Ruggiero. Viewings for Dr. Hart are set for the St. Joseph's Prep foyer on Monday, July 21 from 6:00-8:00pm and the Church of the Gesu on Tuesday, July 22 from 9:00-11:00am. In Memoriam: Coach John "Wags" WagnerWe are sad to share the news of the passing of Prep freshman football coach John “Wags” Wagner from cancer early this morning. This was a battle that Coach Wags had fought bravely for many years. Recently, Coach Wags won the 100th football game of his Prep career but, more importantly, he will be remembered as a model coach who loved his players and St. Joseph’s Prep as he developed the characters of the young men in his charge. Our prayers are with his family and friends and all who have been touched by his kindness. He is survived by his wife Mona and their children Kim, John ’98 and Stephen ’01. Viewings will be held on Monday 7/14 from 6:00-9:00pm and Tuesday 7/15 from 9:00-10:00am at the Church of the Gesu. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday at 10:00am. |

Prep Crew Heads to HenleyThe Prep Varsity Eight is returning to Henley for the first time in three years to compete in the sport's most prestigious regatta. To help send the students off with a celebration, there will be a cocktail party at the Gillin Boathouse on Thursday, June 19 from 6:00-9:00pm. The cost is $100 per couple and all proceeds will help defray the costs of the team's trip to England. Donations are also being accepted online. Rev. George W. Bur, S.J. Named 31st President of St. Joseph's PrepRev. George W. Bur, S.J. has been named the 31st President of St. Joseph's Prep. He replaces Rev. William J. Byron, S.J., who completes his two-year term in June. Fr. Bur has been a leader in educational access for the poor and has a connection to North Philadelphia, where The Prep has been a fixture for more than 140 years. |

Forensics Wins CFL TitleAt the Philadelphia Catholic Forensics League annual banquet, the Prep Forensics team won the Catholic League Championship in Speech and Debate. Congratulations to the team for their cumulative achievements resulting in St. Joseph's Prep capturing the 2007-2008 first place title in the overall school sweepstakes awards. |

Kelly Wins CSC AwardPatrick Kelly '08 received the St. Timothy Award for outstanding leadership in his church and community. The award, sponsored by the United States National Federation for Catholic Youth Ministry, was presented to 25 high school seniors from throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. |

Speedy Morris Golf ClassicThe 33rd annual Speedy Morris Golf Classic, in memory of Jess McCarty in the benefit of the Prep basketball program, will be held on Monday, July 14 at the Mainland Golf Course. A shotgun start will begin at 8:00am.

Prep RFC at USA Rugby High School National Championship
The Prep Rugby team qualified for USA Rugby's High School National Championships. As the number two team in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU), the Prep Ruggers were awarded the eighth seed and will take on Jesuit of Sacramento in the first round on Friday, May 30 in Pittsburgh. Jesuit is the top seed in the tournament and has won multiple national championships. In only its fourth year in existence, the Prep Rugby team is making its first appearance at Nationals. Besides Jesuit of Sacramento and The Prep, other Jesuit high schools competing are Gonzaga (Washington, D.C.), Xavier (New York City) and Jesuit (New Orleans). Crew Dominates at StotesburyThe Prep Crew swept the major events at the Stotesbury Regatta, winning five gold medals as every eight boat that competed came out with a gold medal. The last time the Prep accomplished this feat was in 1997. The winning boats were the varsity 8, 2nd varsity 8, lightweight 8, junior varsity 8 and the freshman 8. Winning the Stotesbury Cup is a fantastic accomplishment with 180 high schools represented and just under 5000 rowers competing. Runowski Earns Awards and HonorsGreg Runowski '09 received the Union League Citizenship Award, the only honoree from the Prep, and was inducted as a member of the SALT (Service and Leadership Team) of the Community Service Corps representing the Office of Youth and Young Adults of the Philadelphia Archdiocese. The Union League Citizenship Award honors students who demonstrate marked evidence of good citizenship as manifested by their cooperative attitude, self-control, perseverance, good sportsmanship and efforts to uphold the best traditions and principles of the American way of life. The SALT team is responsible for maintaining contact with other student leaders in the archdiocese and provide a network of support for them. According to Kathleen Pfeffer of the Archdiocese's Community Service Corps, "Greg has demonstrated an exemplary commitment to service and a desire to grow in faith and leadership." |

Bake Sale to Support China Earthquake ReliefThe Prep will host a bake sale in the dining hall on Thursday, May 22 to raise money for the relief and recovery efforts in China after last week's devastating earthquake. At this point, over 40,000 people have been declared dead and over 38,000 are still missing. Donations can also be made directly to the Red Cross China Earthquake Relief Fund. |

Final Exam Schedule and Room AssignmentsFinal exams for seniors will be held Monday, May 19 - Thursday, May 22 and for underclassmen from Tuesday, May 27 - Wednesday, June 4. Room assignments are now available online. Any changes will be posted in the foyer on the day of an exam. |

Rugby Advances to FinalsPrep Rugby won the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU) Single School Championship with two wins on Mothers' Day in Lancaster. In the semifinals The Prep, representing the EPRU Southern District, took on State College of the Susquehanna District. The match was tight and still up for grabs until the final whistle. State College would score early on St. Joe's Prep to take a 5-0 lead, but Prep was able to respond to tie the game at 5 before the half. The Prep came out storming in the second half, putting up two converted trys to build a 19-5 lead. State College scored a converted try to get within one score and then continued to pressure, but The Prep defense was able to stand strong and prevent any more scoring to take the semi-final 19-12. |

Lacrosse Advances to SemisPrep Lacrosse defeated Cardinal O'Hara 13-2 to advance to the Catholic League semifinals on Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30pm when they will play Archbishop Wood at Saint Joseph's University. The championship game will be played on Thursday night at 7:30pm at Plymouth-Whitemarsh. |

Prep LAX Starts Catholic League Post SeasonPrep Lacrosse, which has finished their regular season with a 17-3 record and top ten ranking in Eastern PA in numerous polls, will play Cardinal O'Hara in the first round of the Philadelphia Catholic League Playoffs on Friday, May 9 at 3:30pm, at Saint Joseph's University. The winner will go onto the semifinals to be played on Tuesday, May 13. |

Prep Rugby Supports Rooney Foundation in EPRU QuarterfinalsFor its playoff game on Sunday, May 4, the St. Joseph's Prep Rugby Club will wear pink jerseys in support of the Kelly Rooney Foundation which raises money for breast cancer research. The Prep will play against Christiana High School in the quarterfinals of the Eastern Pennsylvania Rugby Union (EPRU) at Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park at 1:00pm. The team will wear specially made pink jerseys, which will be auctioned off after the game with the proceeds given to the Kelly Rooney Foundation and Save 2nd Base. Prep coach Tom Farren and team captain Mike Farren lost their mom to cancer a few years ago. Rooney is the wife of Sean Rooney, a 1980 graduate of The Prep. Prep Rugby is 7-0 this season and won the EPRU Red Division Regular Season Title. The winner of this game will move on to the semi-finals/finals next weekend in Harrisburg. |

Settle Awarded Independence Foundation ScholarshipSamuel Settle '08 received an Independence Foundation Scholarship at the 39th Annual National Washington Crossing Foundation Scholarship Awards Ceremony, held at the Foundation's headquarters in Bristol on April 19. Twenty-six scholarships were awarded to students from across the country. These prestigious scholarships are awarded annually to "patriotic high school seniors dedicated to serving their school, their community and their country." This quality of service is exemplified by General Washington and his men in their heroic Crossing of the Delaware on Christmas night 1776, from which the Foundation derives its name. For the past nine years, Samuel has served Friday night meals for the hungry at Woodland Presbyterian Church, sponsored by the University City Hospitality Coalition (UCHC). Last fall, Samuel organized a Dress Down Day which raised $3,000 to help with renovations at the St. Agatha - St. James Church, a UCHC meal site. Samuel serves the UCHC Board of Directors as a Community Liaison. |

Relay Team Set School RecordThe 4 x 1600 team of John Pickhaver '09, Tom Iannacone '08, Chris O'Sullivan '10, and John Castillo '09 set a school record with a time of 18:02.21 at the Great Valley Relays on Saturday, April 19. This shattered the old record, set in 2001, by more than 20 seconds. Tom's older brother John Iannacone '01 was a member of the 2001 relay team. |

McGoldrick Wins Scholar-Athlete AwardJim McGoldrick '08 has won the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athlete Award. McGoldrick will be honored at a banquet on Wednesday, May 7 at Villanova University.
McGoldrick, who was a standout at defensive back, kick returner and part-time running back, has been one of the area's most dynamic players during the past two seasons. An honorable-mention all-Catholic honoree as a junior, Jimmy's senior campaign saw him overcome a vicious pre-season injury and garner first-team, all-Catholic and first-team, all-city accolades. A mixture of humility and toughness, McGoldrick will play football next year at the University of Pennsylvania. |

Hawk Rowing Camp 2008Registration is now open for Hawk Rowing Camp (HRC) 2008. HRC is a "learn to row" program that introduces the Olympic Sport of rowing to boys and girls ages 12 to 15 year olds. The program will be located at the Robert Gillin, Jr. Boathouse; home of the St. Joseph's Prep Rowing Program and will consist of two separate sessions during the month of July. The HRC is a day-camp only with practices scheduled between 1:30 and 5:30pm each afternoon. |

Speedy Morris Basketball CampPrep basketball coach Speedy Morris will host his annual basketball camp for boys ages 8 to 16 in the Kelly Fieldhouse this summer. There are two weeks to choose from, June 9-13 and June 16-20, and the camp runs from 9:00am until 3:00pm. Camps are $190 per week but anyone who registers by Wednesday, April 30 will receive a $15 discount and a free Speedy Morris autographed basketball.

Prep Night at The Arden Theatre: Look Mom, I'm Swell!As Tony Braithwaite takes center stage in his much heralded show, "Look Mom, I'm Swell," we hope to fill the house with Prep fans. The Mothers' and Fathers' Clubs have organized "Prep Night at the Arden" for the performance on Thursday, May 1 at 8:00pm. All seats for this performance have been reserved for The Prep; tickets are $27.50 and will be sold on a first come, first served basis to Prep families, faculty, alumni and friends. Parking Notice: Cleveland St. Temporarily ClosedStarting on Wednesday, March 12 and continuing until further notice Cleveland St. (the narrow alley between the 18th St. and Ridge Ave. parking lots) will be closed due to Philadelphia Water Department activity. The 18th St. lot will only be accessible from 18th St. and the Ridge Ave. lot will only be accessible from Ridge Ave. Cars will be unable to cross between the two parking lots due to the roadwork. |

Prep Hockey Advances at Flyers CupThe Prep AAA team advanced to the second round of the Flyers Cup by defeating Bonner 7-4, despite falling behind 3-1 in the first period. Joe Birmingham '10 had a five-point night (four goals, one assist), Kyle Criscuolo '10 had a goal and three assists, Chris Tanzola '08 and Ted Colella '08 each had goals while Luke Bonhage '08 and Van Stefanou '10 added assists. Paul Sjostrom '11 had 26 saves in goal.
The team will face La Salle in the second round on Wednesday night at Hatfield ice rink. |

NBC's Pizzi Back To SchoolSt. Joseph's Prep was recently featured on NBC 10 in a segment called My Old School. NBC anchor and Prep alum, Justin Pizzi '97 came back to visit his alma mater in early March. His day of reuniting included a visit from Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter '75 and interviews with teachers Mr. Jerry Taylor, Ms. Judy Christian, Mr. Tony Braithwaite '89, Mr. James Murray and Sr. Kate Woody, G.N.S.H., an appearance by the Prep pep band and some student interviews. In addition, Castillo and McGoldrick have been selected to play in the PSFCA East West All-Star Football Game, which will be held in Altoona on Saturday, June 21. Relay Team Excels at StatesThe Distance Medley Relay of Chris O'Sullivan '10, Pat Clark '08, John Castillo '09 and Tom Iannacone '08 finished fifth with a time of 10:34.09 at the PTFCA state meet on March 1 at Penn State. This sets a new school record for meters and has earned them first-team Mile Split elite status and has them ranked as the 20th fastest team in the entire nation for this event. |

Preppers In MMMT ShowFive Prep students (Charlie Gallagher '09, Brian Lojewski '10, Stacey Grasso '11, Kevin Toniazzo-Naughton '11 and Nick Centrella '11) are performing in Merion Mercy Music Theater's show Into the Woods. The show opened on February 29 and continues this weekend (Friday March 7 through Sunday March 9). Show times are Friday and Saturday at 8:00pm and Sunday at 2:00pm. Basketball in Catholic League SemifinalsThis Wednesday (2/20), the Prep basketball team will play in the Catholic League semifinals against Northeast Catholic at 8:30pm, at the Palestra. The game will be preceded by the Ryan-Bonner game, which begins at 7:00pm. Tickets, which cover both games, cost $10 (general admission/students) and $15 (chairbacks) and are available in the Treasurer's Office and at the door. Presale tickets for the chairbacks are $12. The tickets will be sold in the Treasurer's Office on both Tuesday and Wednesday until 3:00pm, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Construction Progress UpdateDemolition of the Jesuit Residence has phased into active construction throughout the building. The small rooms that once housed sixty Jesuits are being reconstituted into the sixteen classrooms, visual arts center, multiple office suites and meeting rooms that the Academic Center will house. As the renovations are being carried out from the fifth floor down, most of the obvious progress is taking place on those upper floors. Twelve Angry Men Tickets On Sale NowTickets for the Cape and Sword Drama Society's production of Twelve Angry Men are on sale now, both online and in the cafeteria during lunch periods. Nutter '75 Sworn In As Mayor of PhiladelphiaMichael Nutter '75 was sworn in as the mayor of Philadelphia in ceremonies yesterday at the Academy of Music. As one of his first public appearances, Mayor Nutter will speak to Prep students on Wednesday, January 9. In addition, three Prep graduates (Brian O'Neill '67, William Greenlee '71 and Jim Kenney '76) were sworn in as members of Philadelphia's City Council. |

SpeakUp!On Saturday, January 26, Merion Mercy Academy will host a special event called SpeakUp!, an opportunity for students from St. Joe's Prep and Merion Mercy to have a day of communication with their parents. The program begins promptly at 9:00am and runs until 2:00pm. Registration begins at 8:15am, and lunch will be provided. Breaking the Waves Swim-A-ThonThe Prep hosted its Breaking the Waves Swim-A-Thon on Sunday, January 20, 2007. The overnight swim-a-thon which rans from 9:30pm to 6:00am is designed to raise awareness of mental health issues, specifically adolescent depression and suicide. A representative from KidsPeace, a national organization that treats, counsels and educates children suffering with depression, addressed the participants. |

Cardinal Foley in the NewsCardinal John P. Foley '53 returned to Philadelphia to celebrate Mass at four churches close to his heart, including the Church of the Gesu. In addition, he greeted his Prep classmates, spoke to the Class of 2008 and spent time with the students at the Gesu School. Basketball at Cancer Research Classic This Weekend
The Prep basketball team will be competing in the Cancer Research Classic at Wheeling Jesuit University on December 15. 12 Angry Men Cast Announced
The cast for the Cape and Sword Drama Society's winter production of 12 Angry Men has been announced. 12 Angry Men is the classic American courtroom drama by Reginald Rose. The Prep was one of a select group of schools to aquire the rights to perform this show while the Broadway National Tour is still running. This also marks the first time in nine years that Cape and Sword has produced three shows in one year. 12 Angry Men runs February 8-10 and 14-17. |

5th Annual Prep Book Drive: December 6 - 20
This year's Prep Book Drive will run from Thursday, December 6 to Thursday, December 20th. This will be the fifth year that The Prep has run this drive, and every year the results improve. Last year in the span of 10 school days over 15,600 books were collected. The books are donated to PhilaREADS and to local area schools. Appropriate donations are books with a grade range from K-12th grade. The books should be ones you would hope to see in a school library or individual classroom library. Thanksgiving Food DriveThe Community Service Corps and the school community are sponsoring a food drive to deliver food baskets to 150 families in the immediate neighborhood of the Prep. Below is a list of the food items each homeroom will collect. Each student is asked to bring in four of the item assigned to his homeroom. Food will be collected from November 5 to 17. Any family willing to donate a turkey can bring it into school on Friday, November 16. If you can donate a turkey, please email Barbara Brown at bbrown@sjprep.org or 215-978-1992. |

Nutter Wins Mayor's Race; Other Prep Election WinnersMichael Nutter '75 has been elected the next Mayor of the City of Philadelphia. Nutter (D) beat out Republican candidate Al Taubenberger and Socialist Party candidate John Staggs in a landslide victory. Nutter captured nearly 83% of the vote, the largest margin in a Philadelphia mayoral race since 1931. A column on Mayor-Elect Nutter was printed in the Sunday, November 4 issue of The Philadelphia Inquirer that discussed Nutter's St. Joseph's Prep education and "Ad Meiorem Dei Gloriam." Nutter will be the first Prep graduate to serve as Mayor. In addition, several other members of the Prep Family were elected to four year terms on Philadelphia's City Council: Frank DiCicco (a Prep Father) won re-election in the 1st District, Brian O'Neill '67 won re-election in the 10th District, and Jim Kenney '76 and Bill Greenlee '71 both won re-election for at-large seats. Beloved Former Disciplinarian Dies, Funeral at GesuRev. John “Moose” McGinty, S.J. '45, former Prefect of Discipline at The Prep and beloved by many alumni, died on Sunday, November 4. Fr. McGinty served two tenures at The Prep and the 1970 Chronicle yearbook was dedicated to him after his final year here.
Viewings for Fr. McGinty will take place on Friday, November 9 from 2:30-3:30pm, at Manresa Hall at Saint Joseph's University and 5:00-7:00pm in the Church of the Gesu. A funeral Mass will take place that evening in the Gesu Church at 7:30pm, with a burial on Saturday in Wernersville.

Cross Country Finishes Second in Catholic LeagueThe cross country team finished second in the Catholic League, narrowly losing to La Salle, 40-49. Forty-nine points is the best score in Prep history. The Prep placed five runners in the top 20: Mark Springel '08 (second, 16:46.73), Tom Iannacone '08 (fourth, 17:14.18), John Pickhaver '09 (eighth, 17:33.56), John Castillo '09 (16 th, 17:54.01) and Mike Wolff '08 (19 th, 18:02.02).
Chris O'Sullivan '10 joined Springel, Iannacone, Pickhaver and Castillo on the first-team All-Catholic, Wolff earned second-team honors, while Tim Dougherty '09 earned honorable mention. This is the most all-Catholics in SJP cross country history. In addition, the JV and freshmen also finished second in the CL. |

Crew Wins Head of the CharlesThe Prep crew team won the Men's Youth 8 event at the Head of the Charles Regatta, the largest single-day regatta in the world, this past Sunday. The boat's lineup consisted of Kyle Moyer (cox), Mike Protesto, John Scanlon, Ryan Sudeck, Kevin Kennedy, Steve Connors, Jim Voter, Matt Horn and John Votta - all members of the class of 2008.
The Prep also placed second in the Men's Youth 4+ event. The boat's lineup was Frank Goldstein '09, Adam Funk '08, Mike White '08, Vince McLaughlin '08 and Keanan Clark '09 (cox). |

Mass in the Church of the Gesu begins at 10:00am, with brunch to follow in the Kelly Fieldhouse. This year, the keynote speaker will be Dr. Andrew von Eschenbach '59, Director of the Food and Drug Administration. Archbishop John Foley '53 Named CardinalArchbishop John Foley '53, one of five living Prep alums serving as Bishops in the Catholic Church, was named a Cardinal today by Pope Benedict XVI. Foley, along with 22 other Bishops and Archbisops from around the world, will formally be elevated at a Vatican ceremony on November 24. Foley, who serves as the grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, will be the first Prep alum ever to serve as a Cardinal. |

Pickhaver ran a season-best 16:21 in the race at Belmont Plateau. Prep vs. Malvern Thanksgiving Day FootballThis year marks the first year in a revived Thanksgiving football rivalry with Malvern Prep. Malvern's Coach Pellegrini and The Prep's Coach Brooks met for a coin toss this week at which The Prep won home field advantage for this year. Pellegrini coached a young Brooks during his time at The Prep in the 1970s. The game will be held at Villanova Stadium on Thanksgiving Day at 10:30am. Construction Progress Update - 10/1/07Internal demolition of the Future Academic Center and the Multi-Purpose Room has almost ended. Walls have been removed, old doorways reinforced by steal beams and the Jesuit Residence's basement has been provided with a state of the art drainage system as well as a new concrete floor. The project remains slated for completion by the start of the 2008 - 2009 academic year. |

Freshman Father-Son NightFreshmen and their fathers are invited to take part in the Fathers' Club's Freshman Father-Son Night on Friday, October 5 from 7:00-10:00pm. Dress is very informal since fathers will be invited to join their sons in picnic style games and trivia contests.
Joey Callahan, one of the cleverest comics on the comedy scene today, will perform near the end of the evening's activities. Complimentary hoagies, pizza and soft drinks will be provided throughout the evening.
If a dad is unable to attend, students are encouraged to bring an older brother, uncle, grandfather or family friend to come. Even if no male adult is able to attend, please encourage your son to come out and enjoy the evening with his new classmates.

Mixer Tickets and Hawk's Nest T-Shirts Available OnlineThis year students have the option to purchase Mixer Tickets at a discount online. A set of one ticket to each of the four mixers costs on $20 (regular cost $28). The mixers will be held on September 21, December 7, February 22, and April 18. Individual tickets for the September Mixer are now also available for $7. Students can also purchase their Hawk's Nest T-Shirts which will entitle them to special give-aways at many Prep athletic events this year. Cape and Sword Announces Season and Auditions for Fall ShowThis year for the first time in nine years, the Cape and Sword Drama Society will produce three shows - the fall play "Death of a Salesman" November 9-18, the winter play "12 Angry Men" February 8-17; and the spring musical "The Mystery of Edwin Drood" May 8-18. Auditions for "Death of a Salesman" will be on Thursday September 6 beginning at 2:30pm in the Prep Theater. All students, and girls from any area high schools are welcomed to audition. Gennaro and Kennedy to Row for U.S. TeamMichael Gennaro '07 and Kevin Kennedy '08 were selected to row on the U.S. Junior National Team in Beijing, China. Mike and Kevin were two of 14 selected for the team which will compete in August for the world championship. The site will be the home of rowing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. |
