Jim Glavin '65, Head Coach

Jim Glavin '65 is the SJP Head Crew Coach. As a rower, Jim is a Dad Vail and National Rowing Champion and he has coached at every level of US Rowing since 1972. Jim was Vesper Boat Club's Youth and Head coach. Jim also coached the USA Boy's Junior Team, the US Elite men's and women's boats, St. Joseph's University, Baldwin School, Harriton High School, and most recently Mount Saint Joseph's Academy where his freshman eight won 3 consecutive national championships, including an undefeated season in 2005. The boats Jim has coached have won the Dad Vail, the US National Junior, Senior and Elite Championships, Senior Canadian Henley Championships, the Head of the Charles point trophy, the Dad Vail point trophy and US National championships.

 

Bob Wilson, Assistant Coach

Bob Wilson began his lifelong affiliation with rowing at Harriton High School, where he captained the crew and stroked the Junior Four that won the Scholastic Nationals title. At the University of Pennsylvania, Bob rowed first boat, Frosh Heavyweight. For the next three years, he rowed as a lightweight winning almost every cup race alongside Coach Konopka his junior and senior years. In his junior year, Penn's Lights won the EARC Eastern Sprints and competed in the Henley Royal Regatta that summer. Following graduation, Bob rowed competitively at Vesper Boat Club. For the past twenty years, Bob has been competing at the Masters Division level. In 2006, Bob won at Masters Worlds in Princeton, New Jersey. In addition to competing, Bob has been very active on the Vesper Boat Club Board of Directors and has thrice served as its Treasurer.

 

Shawn Duff '04, Assistant Coach

Shawn Duff '04 is in his second season of coaching at St. Joseph's Prep. A 2004 Prep graduate, he won multiple Stotesbury Cup regattas as well as Philadelphia City and Catholic league championships and medaled at the Nationals. Shawn then went on to row for the University of Delaware where he was awarded 'Most Valuable Oarsman' in 2005 and served as co-captain in 2007-2008. While at UD, Shawn rowed in the Varsity 8 for three seasons, winning three CAA championship regattas and was a part of the 2008 Dad Vail men's team point championship. Shawn graduated in 2008 with a B.A. in Economics and currently is a field electrician for Carr and Duff, Inc.

 

Al Lawn, Assistant Coach

Al started sculling at age six and by high school, he had won the Stotesbury, National, NYAC and Independence youth sculling races and titles (1972-1976). During that time, he represented the USA on Junior teams in 1974 and 1975. Al started sweep rowing as a freshman at Yale, where his boat lost to Imperial College in the finals of the Ladies Challenge Plate at Henley in 1978. During his Varsity career at Yale, Al rowed in 3 boats that had undefeated seasons winning 2 Eastern Sprints, 2 Harvard - Yale races and 2 trips to Henley where he won the Ladies Plate (1979) and Lost to the British National Team in the Grand Challenge Cup (1981). This same boat was the International Eight Champion (FISA level A) at Amsterdam 1981. He was twice selected All Ivy. As a club rower, Al won numerous national championships as junior, elite and master in double, fours (with and w/o), eights and quads from 1973-2003. Al has coached at the University of Pennsylvania as Freshman Lightweight coach (1981-1982), finishing 4th @ Eastern Sprints, 1982. Al has been coaching at Saint Joseph's Preparatory School since 2007.

 

Bruce Konopka, Assistant Coach

Bob Kaehler is the owner of Coach Kaehler Sports Endurance Coaching, located in Holland, PA. Bob specializes and partners with individuals and endurance sports teams to help them compete more effectively by educating and implementing the philosophies of body balance. He is a three-time Olympian (1992, 1996, and 2000), four-time world champion men's eight (1994, 1997, 1998, and 1999) and a ten-time national team rower. Bob most recently was the strength and conditioning coach for the US bronze medal Men's 8+, at the Beijing 2008 Olympics, and is now working with the Women's National Team. Bob is a Columbia graduate '91 (M.S. Physical Therapy), and has been a certified strength and conditioning specialist since 1997. Bob has been affiliated with the Hospital for Special Surgery and the Hospital of The University of Pennsylvania prior to becoming a practicing partner for his own clinic for over seven years.

 

Johan Quie, Assistant Coach

Johan Quie is in his first year of coaching at the Prep. He began rowing as a walk-on for the University of Minnesota in 2005 and during his first year broke the program's novice 2k erg record. He rowed in the Varsity 8 for three seasons, placing third at the San Diego Crew Classic and Midwest Championships in 2008 and was selected for the American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) First Team All-American Team. In 2007 & 2008 he spent his summers training in Philadelphia with Penn AC, winning two championships at the Royal Canadian Henley in the U-23 8+ and Sr. 8+ as well as gold in the Sr. 4+ at the US Rowing National Championship. Johan graduated from the University of Minnesota in 2008 with a degree in Journalism, and is currently training with the Penn AC Elite program.

 

Bruce Konopka, Assistant Coach

Bruce is lending his time to the Prep, part time, and is working with the Varsity Lightweights. Bruce has coached rowing at multiple levels for over 35 years. He coached at the University of Pennsylvania for over 20 years as frosh and varsity heavyweight coach and 10 years as varsity lightweight coach. He coached the winner of the Ladies Plate at English Henley in 1995. In 1984, he was selected, by his peers, as EARC Coach of the Year. Bruce coached the US Men’s National Teams six times, coaching bronze, silver and gold medalist crews. Additionally, he coached the Men's pair without at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona. Bruce served as Head Crew Coach at St. Joe's Prep from 1988 through 1991. His crews won may Stotesbury and National Championships, earning 2 trips to the English Henley in 1988, 1991.

 

 

Freshman Coaches:

Dan Kilpatrick '94, Freshman Coach

Dan Kilpatrick '94 is the SJP Freshman Crew Coach and Crew Moderator. Dan rowed for SJP's lightweight program winning three Catholic League Championships and medaling in Stotesbury (Gold '93, Silver '94) and Schoolboy National’s (Bronze '93, Silver '94). Dan rowed for SJU as a lightweight and heavyweight rower. He medaled in the Dad Vail (Gold '97, Silver '99). Dan coached at Gonzaga College HS and SJP with his boats winning Stotesbury Gold ('03, '05, and '09) and Silver ('04). His teams also competed in the SRAA where they won Gold ('02, '05, and '09) and Silver ('03, '04). Dan is the SJP Math Department Chair.

 

Bill Gennaro '04, Assistant Coach

Bill Gennaro '04 is the Assistant Freshman Coach. While at The Prep, he won two Catholic League and City Championships, and medaled twice at Stotesbury ('03 Silver, '04 Silver), and Schoolboy Nationals ('02 Gold, '03 Silver). While rowing for Temple University, Bill was a member of three Dad Vail Regatta Gold Medal crews: 2005 Freshman 4, and the 2006 and 2007 Second Eights. He was also bow seat in Temple's 2005 IRA National Championship Freshman 4. He has been coaching/volunteering with the team on and off since 2005, and this is his second full season as the Assistant Freshman Coach. Bill graduated from Temple in 2008 with a degree in Communications, and is currently a graduate student at West Chester University, working towards a masters and certification in Secondary Education.

 

Dan Powers '04, Assistant Coach

Don Powers '04 comes to the Prep Crew coaching staff with over 8 years of rowing experience. A 2004 graduate of St. Joe's Prep, Don was a member of the 2003-4 Varsity Eight that won the Philadelphia City and Catholic League Championships and were silver medalists at the Stotesbury regatta. After the Prep, Don received a scholarship to row at Temple University. At Temple University, Don was a four time medalist in the Dad Vail Regatta including a gold medal in the 2006 Junior Varsity Eight and a Silver Medal in the 2007 Varsity Eight. In addition to competitive success, Don received the Most Valuable Oarsman Award his senior year, served as the team's Co-Captain for the 2007-2008 season and was a finalist for Temple University Male Athlete of the Year. Currently, Don is in his second year at Temple University's Beasley School of Law.
