Classics
Welcome to the Classics Department Homepage!
Classics courses provide students with a broad range of learning experiences that animate the philosophy and goals of the school. The study of Latin and Greek gives students the opportunity to encounter the roots of their culture, language and history. The study of the Classics is good for future careers in law, medicine, business, education, writing, and politics, just to name a few!
Building grammar and vocabulary skills will improve students’ understanding of English grammar, making them better speakers and writers. Studying Latin also will help with their understanding of Romance languages, such as Spanish, French, and Italian. According to some studies, the benefits of a Classical education also include SAT score increases of 140-160 points and even improved college GPA’s.
Besides learning the Classical languages, students will broaden their cultural appreciation in their Latin and Greek classes, because Greco-Roman society is the basis for all of Western civilization, and especially American culture. We borrow our legal and governmental systems directly from the Roman Republic. And since Rome was a melting pot of cultures, the lessons that we as Americans can learn from their society are invaluable.
"Nescire autem quid antequam natus sis acciderit, id est semper esse puerum. " Cicero
To know nothing about what happened before you were born is to remain forever a child.
